The coronavirus outbreak has reached the US. So far, there are over 100 cases in our country and at least 6 people are dead. Other affected countries have taken stringent measures to preserve public health, including cancellations of mass events and quarantines.

Yet, despite the persistent threat coronavirus poses to public health, the National Cherry Blossom Festival is still going forward. According to a local news outlet, "organizers say preparations are on track, and that they’re not deterred by concerns about the novel coronavirus disrupting travel and the economy." Problem is, the coronavirus doesn't just disrupt travel and the economy. It also kills people. And it kills them in horrible ways (which cannot be described).

The continuation of the National Cherry Blossom Festival and other large-scale public events will certainly endanger the lives of DC's citizens. Thereby, we are calling for the organizers of the festival to cancel it immediately. If they do not, we call on the Mayor and Council of the District of Columbia to force them to do so, using threat of arrest and prosecution if necessary. If DC's municipal government does not take action, we ask the federal government to intervene on our behalf.
