Dear NCBTMB,

The COVID-19 Pandemic continues to increase its impact in the United States, making work for many massage therapists either dangerous or impossible. The stress, health and economic concerns are impacting us all, and are certainly felt by your management team and directors.

We are writing to ask you to temporarily amend your renewal policy to reflect the significant financial and personal challenges massage therapists are facing at this time.

Either of these options would be helpful:
1. Provide an automatic six month renewal extension for all certificants who must renew by the end of 2020 or
2. Reduce the CEs required for renewal to a maximum of the 3CEs required in ethics.

Your certificants need support and assistance right now, "business as normal" does not exist in any profession, certainly not massage. Many of us have seen our CE classes canceled, and while online courses are an option, the expense remains and many are more introductory and do not offer the in-depth level of education we seek.

This pandemic has brought an opportunity for reflection to us all. We are each required to make difficult choices about what is most important for our career. We ask NCBTMB to also reflect on how best you can support the industry and move us forward in the future.

In the short term, you can do that by providing relief for your renewing certificants during a pandemic.

In the long term, we ask you to shift the process, requirements, and reach of NCBTMB Board Certification to make it something that does provide a visible and identifiable value to those of us who work to earn and maintain it.

Thank you.
