Monique Unger started this petition to National Australia Day Council

Australian of the Year Awards, this year celebrating its 60th anniversary, recognise and honour an exceptional group of highly respected Australians who ignite discussion and change on issues of national importance. Each year our nation celebrates the achievements and contributions of these citizens who are role models for us all. They inspire us through their achievements and challenge us to make our own contribution to creating a better Australia.

Each state and territory send their Australian of the Year for each category as a nominee for the national Australian of the Year (there is also the Senior & Young Australian of the Year & Local Hero Awards). The national Australian of the Year (or joint recipients, as it was in 2019) is revealed and announced by the Prime Minister. The presentation ceremony occurs on the eve of Australia Day, in Canberra, where celebrations also include morning tea with the Prime Minister at The Lodge.

In times gone by, being invited to morning tea with the Prime Minister would have been an honour. But is it now?

Consider all the local fire fighters, who in these horrific times, are absolute heroes and at the forefront of our thoughts and appreciation. We have probably all seen the footage of them refusing to shake Scott Morrison's hand because they are so revolted by his inadequate reaction and lack of pro-action in regards to the National bush fire emergency. Perhaps having Scott Morrison presenting the Australian of the Year awards to such well deserving citizens, that have been chosen from across the country, is not appropriate this year. Better someone who is respected should have the honour of recognising these people and being photographed with them in their well-deserved, well-earned moment of recognition.

Please sign this petition if you think the announcement and hosting of the Australian of the Year ceremony in 2020 should be done by a more honourable and deserving Australian.

I put forward the suggestion of the Governor General of Australia, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley.

If you have a suggestion, or wish to support one that has already been suggested, please include it in the optional comments (“I’m signing because…”) section when you sign the petition. You can read other comments and suggestions below.
