Institute the "Rooney Rule" in Real Estate

Over the past few years, attention has been focused on the lack of diversity among the ranks of leadership in the real estate industry -- particularly in organized real estate organizations, such as Associations and MLSs, but also throughout the brokerage, franchise, and vendor ranks. Despite 62% of all REALTORS being women, far fewer are in the executive and leadership roles throughout organized real estate. In addition, there is a distinct lack of senior level executives throughout real estate who are ethnic minorities.

And yet, the real estate industry is neither sexist nor racist. In fact, it has taken the lead on inclusiveness through its Code of Ethics, prohibiting discrimination based on sexual preference. REALTORS are among the most sensitive and understanding of the importance of diversity. Women and minorities are often elected to leadership positions: Bill Brown, the 2017 President of NAR, is African-American, while Elizabeth Mendenhall, the 2018 President, is a young woman. It is in the ranks of staff -- Association Executives, MLS CEO's, brokerage and franchise senior staff -- where there is a noticeable lack.

Whether the lack of female and minority leadership in real estate is a true problem or merely an issue of perception, there is a solution: implement the "Rooney Rule" in real estate.

The Rooney Rule is a policy in the National Football League that requires teams to interview minority candidates for senior positions -- head coach, general manager, etc. There is no quota or preference given to a candidate because of minority status. The requirement is merely to give such candidates, who might otherwise be overlooked or missed, serious consideration. Other industries have adopted similar policies in their hiring practices for senior positions.

NAR should implement the Rooney Rule requiring that all REALTOR-affiliated organizations interview at least one female and/or minority candidates for senior positions. Furthermore, NAR should encourage companies in the industry, from franchises to brokerages to technology companies, to do the same. Again, no preference should be given to a female or a minority candidate just because of gender or minority status. But they should at least be considered.

Please support this petition to NAR, to Dale Stinton, CEO of NAR, and to Bill Brown, 2017 President of NAR, to implement the Rooney Rule in real estate.
