We Need Safe Schools To Teach Music

The National Association for Music Education has been vocal in advocating for the inclusion of strong music programs in schools throughout the US. NAfMe has also spoken out about budget and policy issues at state and federal levels that directly impact music education. We are thankful for their strong advocacy work.
Public school music educators have seen our jobs get increasingly difficult over the years, with shrinking budgets, loss of instructional time as other subjects are prioritized, and countless other challenges. But, the fundamental issue of school, student, and teacher safety has not been addressed by the organization. As our schools are plagued with an epidemic of intolerance, bullying, violence and increased mental health concerns, educators need help.
We, the undersigned, ask for NAfME to step up and make a public statement regarding safe schools for students and teachers. We ask NAfME to continue to be a strong advocate for music students and music educators across the nation, and address this fundamental need in public education. We ask that NAfME prioritize this issue, and work to offer resources to NAfME membership, and other public music educators, and to advocate for strong policy to give us safe learning and working environments.
