To advance the College of Liberal and Fine Arts (COLFA) and the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) into the 21st century, we as students must not only seek to keep pace with the changes in our local community, but with changes taking place in the global community. We must take the lead and exceed in preparing for the ever-changing career fields in criminology, education, global logistics (including, but not limited to: banking, business media, and tourism), foreign relations, as well as cyber and national security.

The UTSA Department of Modern Languages and Literatures currently offers a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Spanish, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Modern Language Studies (available in French, German, Japanese, Russian, and, beginning in the Fall of 2020, Chinese, Italian, and Korean). The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures also offers a Master of Arts in Spanish, a certificate in Spanish Translation and Interpreting Studies, and a Graduate Certificate in Linguistics. Students pursuing a Master’s Degree in Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Italian, Korean, and Russian are thus underserved, as no graduate studies are available for students studying these languages.

We, the students, understand it may not be feasible to offer a Master of Arts in each individual language. However, with the additional languages being offered in the Fall of 2020, and in light of the demands brought by the continuing diversification, globalization, and influx of non-English speakers, we petition the UTSA to open the Certificate of Spanish Translation and Interpreting Studies to all languages offered at UTSA. For students pursing a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Language Studies within the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, we petition the criteria for the Graduate Certificate in Linguistics to be expanded, revised, and updated to be offered as a Master of Arts in Linguistics. Linguistics is, after all, the scientific study of language, and for UTSA to step forward to meet the increasing global demands, it is imperative to foster the knowledge and appreciation of not only the English language, but the other languages and cultures of our world.

Thank you in advance for your expedient attention in this matter.
