Legalization of marijuana

Marijuana is the dried leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds from the cannabis sativia or cannabis indica. It has THC and other compounds in it that alter the mind. Marijuana has some side effects like altered senses, changes in mood, impaired body movement, impaired memory, etc. but the side effects don’t have significant harmful effects to the human body. There aren’t even any deaths associated with marijuana nationwide. There are around 88,000 deaths annually associated with alcohol alone. So why is it okay for alcohol to be legal at age 21 when it causes so many more deaths and harmful incidents than marijuana?

Georgia marijuana laws are pretty strict but lots of counties have different sentencing programs for people, which means that you won’t always get jail time for having marijuana. Possession: if you have 1 oz or less its only a misdemeanor and only 1 year in jail or a 1,000 dollar fine. More than 1 oz is a felony which is 1-10 years in jail. Sale or trafficking: having 10 lbs or less is 1-10 years in jail. Having 10-2,000 lbs is 5 years in jail and a mandatory $100,000 fine. 2,000-10,000 lbs is 7 years in jail and a mandatory $250,000 fine. Over 10,000 lbs is 15 years in jail and a mandatory $1,000,000 fine. As far as medical use patients can only have up to 20 ounces of low THC cannabis oil.

Marijuana even has many positive impacts on tax revenue, income, and jobs. Marijuana is legal in Colorado and in 2015 Colorado collected more than $135 million in taxes and fees on medical and recreational marijuana. Sales were over $996 million and sales in North America grew 30%. Sales in a larger state could even be over $15 billion in sales revenue. Therefore the legalization would even have positive effects to the economy of our whole country. Legalizing marijuana in Georgia would also help create jobs because of the nurseries and dispensaries that would be set up. There is even a RCG Economics and Marijuana Policy Group study that says that having legal marijuana in a state could support over 41,000 jobs till 2024 and help the state earn over $1.7 billion in labor income.

Hopefully you will consider our proposal for legalizing marijuana in the state of Georgia!
