Get us a Crossing Guard!

Dear Nassau County Legislators Denise Ford & Howard Kopel:
We, the parents of East Rockaway School District [included herein] and our fellow friend and family, would like to formally request Nassau County to hire and fund a Crossing Guard at the Atlantic Avenue and Ocean Avenue intersection, in East Rockaway, NY.
We would like to illustrate a few points as to why we feel Crossing Guard is needed at this intersection.
Currently, there are no alternatives for children and residents south of Atlantic Ave to successfully cross Atlantic Ave with a crossing guard's guidance. There are no crossing guards at Main St & Atlantic Ave, Baisley Ave & Atlantic Ave, Rhame Ave & Atlantic Ave, or Denton Ave & Atlantic Ave. If a Crossing Guard was implemented at Atlantic Ave and Ocean Ave, we would instruct our children to use that route when they went to school.
Secondly, the school at 443 Ocean Ave is not just a High School. It is a combined Jr./Sr. HS, meaning 7th graders, aged as young as 11 attend this school and walk or bike there on a regular basis.
Thirdly, this intersection often creates a traffic logjam with multiple stoppages in traffic because of our two LIRR train crossings. Frustrated drivers who are running late, often speed to avoid this adjacent light. This is already known to Nassau County, because the intersection has housed a Red Light Camera for a number of years.
Additionally, the Beechwood Organization in Jericho recently announced a redevelopment of the dilapidated Davison Boat Yard and will build 84 condominiums on that site. Their website indicates that they will open in the Spring of 2018. This means that there is a chance that children will be living in those units and attending our schools.
Lastly, unfortunately, we have a major problem with drivers and their phones. This intersection has about 30,000 cars per day and we can't afford to wait any longer in making this happen.
We request that you host a town meeting in East Rockaway, so we can tell you why this is important to us in person.
Thank you very much for your attention to this very serious matter.
Parents of East Rockaway School District, and our friends and family.
