A small stretch of Mineola Avenue that spans several residential areas including Roslyn Estates, Roslyn Pines and is the main route for buses to Pierce Day School/Camp and The Heights Elementary school has become a dangerous speed trap.

As we all know Mineola Avenue is the pass through for a ton of traffic from two major highways, the LIE, Northern State and Northern Blvd. When local and out of town traffic travels down Mineola Avenue from these expressways, that traffic is met by a flurry of lights, one right after the other for several blocks and then suddenly the lights stop. Frustrated by the overload of lights at the beginning of Mineola avenue, which are all timed out of sync,  traffic speeds up in a rush toward Northern Blvd. The remaining .8 mile stretch, near schools and neighborhoods is devoid of any lights, ticketing mechanisms or signs. It winds around past Pierce camp and there is a blind spot for what's ahead. The next traffic light is at Pine Drive, right by the entrance to the Pines and Roslyn Estates. Over the past four years, Nassau Police have responded to more than 100 accidents, of varying degrees of severity, on the .8 mile lightless stretch of road where children and residents travel daily to get to school, camp and their neighborhoods. The accidents have resulted in serious injuries, deaths and near death experiences. They have involved cars, trucks, motorcycles and tankers.  The intersection right before Northern is also a major source of traffic accidents as the conflicting intersection lights do not operate in a clear and logical manner.

Nassau County has ignored this .8 mile stretch speed trap, that it has created, even though it has been brought to the County Exec's attention multiple times over the past year. Residents and schools have advocated to get a light on Mineola Avenue stretching as far back as decades. Nassau has used the excuse that the area is a private road, however, Mineola Avenue has multiple lights along the first half of it, which is the cause of the speed trap on the remaining leg of PUBLIC road. Nassau has negligently and recklessly continued to allow serious accidents to occur with no efforts to protect residents and children. Please sign this petition which is asking for immediate changes to the .8 mile dangerous speed trap, including

1. an extra light between Pine Drive and Warner Avenue to slow down traffic,

2. slow down and children/school ahead signs,

3. ticketing mechanisms and

4. a turning signal at the entrance to Pine Drive to prevent cars trying to beat the light to turn into the neighborhood as oncoming traffic also tries to beat the light from the opposite direction.

We need action now to save lives.
