We the undersigned, believe it is long overdue for Nashville to join other progressive cities and divest from for-profit, private prison and immigrant detention companies like CoreCivic.

In light of recent reports on the Trump administrations’ family separations, the role of CoreCivic which owns and operates the Otay Mesa Detention Center in California has been particularly troubling. Those detained in this facility include immigrants seeking asylum and mothers who have been separated from their children. Detainees have been outspoken about the lack of adequate medical care, unsanitary conditions, and mistreatment by guards for cheering as protestors chanted outside.

U.S. Senator Kamala Harris recently toured the facility and shared with the press that Honduran and Salvadoran women inside the Otay Mesa facility were in "complete and utter despair" about being held without their children in what Harris called a "typical prison setting." With CoreCivic being headquartered here in Nashville, TN, and our city’s investment in its inhumane business, we demand immediate action to remove any financial investments in the company. This call takes on added urgency as CoreCivic seeks to expand its Otay Mesa facility in Southern California to house more detainees in the coming months.

We believe that profiting off of the incarceration of Black and Brown peoples, is rooted in a shameful truth of America’s history. It is time for Nashville to recognize and address these past and current transgressions, by taking action now.
