Tracy Hancock started this petition to Nashville Bar Association Young Lawyers Division

Hardworking volunteers from the Nashville Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division run the Davidson County portion of the Tennessee High School Mock Trial Competition each year. Currently, the competition coordinators do not allow teachers to view the judges' scorecards from the mock trial rounds.

Teachers and students spend long hours preparing and polishing their strategies and performances, and they want to know how they did, what worked, and what didn’t work. That is a fundamental part of mock trial’s educational objectives. However,  those educational objectives are impeded when teachers and students are not able to see the score sheets to learn what performances and strategies were effective and what were ineffective. Without this information, coaches are not able to meaningfully evaluate strategic choices and students cannot learn how to improve for their next mock trial event.

Although the competition coordinators claim that the Rules of the 2019 Tennessee High School Mock Trial Competition preclude them from releasing score sheets, this is mistaken. Rule 27 states, "Score sheets will not be made available to any person or team at any time during or after the state competition." On its face, this rule applies only to the state competition, not local competitions. Even if this rule is applied to the local competitions, releasing the score sheets before the state competition does not violate the plain text of the rule.

Therefore, because release of the score sheets is at the discretion of the district coordinators, the undersigned students, teachers, coaches, and parents respectfully request that the Nashville Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division exercise its discretion and release the score sheets from this and future competitions to any school who requests to view them.
