Josh T started this petition to NASA

A petition to prevent the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) from implementing their plan to utilize a targeted spacecraft in order to redirect a potential approaching asteroid from making contact with the earth. As outlined in their "National Near-Earth Object Preparedness Strategy and Action Plan" document, NASA plans to ambitiously launch a rocket bound for a potential asteroid threat in the hopes that the impact could alter the asteroid's trajectory and subsequently prevent an impact with Earth. Although this could, indeed, avert a possible global catastrophe, there are a number of ethical, environmental, and social issues being disrupted by this idea. For starters, the decision to carry out this procedure would be solely overseen by American administrations. As the matter would be an international affair, the control of a single nation should not determine its outcome on behalf of the entire global community. Furthermore, the decision to spare the human race from extinction could be excessively harmful on the environment as a whole as it could ensure the continued pollution and desolation of the Earth's ecosystems on behalf of the human race for centuries longer. Another major aspect to consider when determining the continuation of humanity's existence is the general will of the people. A major portion of the population (particularly younger generations) have expressed collective desires against living in recent decades. By interfering with natural selection - and deflecting an asteroid - the wishes of a major portion of humanity could be infringed upon. By signing this petition, we can represent the voice of the unheard in advocating against NASA's artificial interference of a future asteroid threat.
