On Sunday 28 January 2018 an 8 month old baby girl was raped by her 28 year old cousin in the outskirts of New Delhi, India. This horrific crime is not unique in India.
In 2016, an 11-month-old was kidnapped by a neighbour while she slept next to her mother and brutally raped for two hours.
And in November 2015, a three-month-old was kidnapped and assaulted in the southern city of Hyderabad .
According to the National Crime Records Bureau data, 2016 saw almost 20,000 cases of child rape being registered in India - a rise of 82% from 2015.
These crimes are inhuman in the extreme and in our view beyond redemption. Therefore we urge you to support the position of Swati Maliwal, Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women who is lobbying Rajnath Singh, the Home Minister to introduce the death penalty for child rapists.
In December 2017, the state of Madhya Pradesh did introduce capital punishment for those found guilty of the rape of girls under 12 years old we ask that this law is rolled out across India.
