I am a 12th grader at Naperville North High School and I believe the breadth of courses offered by Naperville 203’s current online academy plan is severely insufficient. Students like myself have been strongly encouraged to develop 4 year plans by their counselors. Given those 4 year plans, the options provided for students for the upcoming school year do not allow them to be safely carried out. For me to maintain the sequence of classes I have studied for the last three years and to take the classes required by college admission requirements, I have no alternative but pick the hybrid option which I do not feel comfortable or safe in. Clearly, my plans and the plans of many others do not work with the Online Academy since the course options are currently so limited. Very few of my classes are currently offered in the Online Academy.

The current Return to Learn plan also does not work for students who are worried about their safety when returning physically to class but need classes for college admissions requirements, e.g., the admission requirements of the University of Illinois, University of Wisconsin, or the University of Iowa. For a school district where 97% of the students go on to college, offering only the classes seniors need to graduate on-line is not a viable option. The level of discomfort in returning to classes has increased since the district's survey of parents and students because of the dramatically increased number of COVID-19 cases across the country, especially among younger people.

Beyond the course selection issue, the current plan does not address how kids would keep up with classes in the Hybrid model if they got sick or had to be quarantined for two weeks or longer and their courses were not available in the Online Academy Students should not feel pressured to attend classroom school if they are feeling sick. Additionally, if a student chooses the Online Academy in the fall, they are forced into that option and the courses that option incurs for the full year because they could not return to an Honors or AP class if it was not offered in the Online academy in the first semester during the second semester.

The online vs hybrid choice wasn't really a choice and we felt forced to choose a risky option for our kids and our family. We shouldn't have been put in a position to choose between our kids' future and the health of our family.

We should not penalize students who feel that they need to be remote for their health and safety.

DL students should all have access to Dual Language. It is not impossible. I even sent the superintendent programs that are/will be used by other schools across the country. He simply is not interested in hearing.

I’m signing this because we should be providing the same resources to students whether they feel safe in a 203 building or not.

No student should have to chose between their safety and their right to a rigorous education.

As per the current stitch and given the forecast of another high wave of pendamic in Fall, District 203 should offer more honors and elective courses for Online Academy.
