Juveniles in adult prisons are 35% more likely to end up back in prison after being released. In addition, they are 5 times more likely to be sexually assaulted and 36 times more likely to commit suicide in adult prisons than they would be in juvenile detention centers. The Second Chances for Youth Bill will eliminate legislation allowing minors to be tried as adults in a court of law. It will also require that juveniles convicted of one nonviolent offense be sentenced to a non-incarceration punishment. By passing this law, the state of California will keep young people out of prisons and provide second chances for adolescents who commit crimes.
