Suicide aswell as depression is on its rise and we need to figure out a way to lessen this problem the best we can. Suicide has increased 24% just between 1999-2014. On average there are 129 people committing sucide ecah day. In 2017 there was over 1,400,000 sucide attempts. In 2015 sucide and self injury cost the US 69 billion dollars.

We should provide everyone with the ability to go an see a therapist. Mental illness is a big issue that needs to be put to a stop. Therapist tend to not accept certain insurance companies because they don’t pay enough to the therapist. Insurance companies don’t want to continuously have to pay more every time a therapist raises their rates, so they won’t and therapist will just stop accepting that insurance. Which this can lead to people not having a fair opportunity to good treatment of mental illness.

Therapy is there to help people who are struggling with problems and looking for a way to get help. Most insurance companies will cover some type of therapy but there is no guarantee that this therapist will be right for you.
If you are struggling, you want to have someone who will make you comfortable and feel like they truly care. When your options are limited because no one will take your insurance you tend to give up and if you do find someone to take your insurance you don’t have much of a choice of anyone else. Your opportunity is help is limited.

There should be a law in place where therapist and insurance companies need to have an agreeable rate to where everyone is able to have the average amount of care. Being the average is between 75-150$ a session, this should be the what an insurance company has to pay. There needs to be a minimum amount that insurance companies have to help with mental illness and the minimum shouldn’t just be anything it needs to be at least the lower end of average for what one session cost ($75).
To make sure everyone had the same opportunity to the same therapist, therapist shouldn’t be allowed to deny an insurance company. There would need to be an agreeable arrangement of the amount of sessions per month if a client is to chose a certain therapist that exceeds a max amount the insurance company will pay. For instance the max is set at $300 the insurance is willing to pay to the therapist but it cost $100 per session so to stay within the max the client would only get 3 sessions a month.

I started this petition because...
Most people have had a time in their life where they have felt weak or felt like they needed help in some way. Sometimes the best thing you can do is talk to someone who can help. When I was about 7 years old I had gotten a child psychologist. To me it helped a lot with all that I was going through, it was something I needed. For me it was like my safe haven. Though I stopped going, it truly helps to have someone to talk to and can really bring you out of a dark situation.

Years later, I had expressed the want to go to therapy again but it was no longer possible because it was way too expensive and they no longer accepted our insurance at that same place. To me I wanted to stick with the same therapist that I had because I already knew that I felt comfortable with her. When I found out I couldn’t have the same therapist I just didn’t go. When you never get help with a problem you have and just keep it all in it never fails to make you feel worse. Which is why I believe if people had more of a chance to talk to people and find a therapist who cares the rates of sucide and depression would decrease.
