The Covid-19 Pandemic is having a crippling effect on our economy and health care system.

  1. Over 44 million Americans have lost jobs and filed unemployment claims
  2. 40 U.S. states are reporting rapidly rising Covid-19 cases
  3. Prior to Covid-19, 61% of adults received employer sponsored health insurance (ESI)
  4. With millions subjected to firings and lay-offs, there are 26 million newly uninsured Americans due to ESI loss.
  5. The open enrollment period for to the Affordable Care Act has passed
  6. A Special Enrollment Period must open to help Americans who have lost employer sponsored insurance coverage

U.S. State Health Departments report record numbers of new cases each day particularly in Arizona, Florida and Texas as of late June. Healthcare coverage is of extreme importance due to the nexus of 2.6 million reported cases of Covid-19 intersecting with massive unemployment in the U.S. It is vital for the health and well-being of all Americans to have access to affordable healthcare coverage.

Normally, the Open Enrollment Period to secure a plan on the healthcare exchanges is  from November 1st-December 15th.  Exceptions have been made in the past where the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) opened a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). Some examples of these exceptions included natural disasters or life changing events such as job loss, marriage or having a baby. The pandemic has left millions of unemployed Americans vulnerable in terms of their health and ability to retain affordable insurance. We strongly believe this national emergency qualifies for a Special Enrollment Period to be opened and remain open indefinitely as waves of Covid-19 continue to impact U.S. citizens.

We urge the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi and the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Seema Verma to channel the powers of the Congress and the CMS and immediately expand the Special Enrollment Period. And we believe the SEP should continue indefinitely until the Covid-19 crisis passes. This will create a critical safety net for Americans in crisis. This cannot wait.

If you believe that a Special Enrollment Period should be opened indefinitely so that unemployed Americans can attain affordable insurance through the Healthcare Marketplace/ACA during the Covid-19 pandemic, we ask for your support and signature below.
