"Prison isolation fits the definition of torture as stated in several international human rights treaties, and thus constitutes a violation of human rights law. The U.N. Convention Against Torture defines torture as any state-sanctioned act 'by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person' for information, punishment, intimidation, or for a reason based on discrimination.Since the 1990s, the U.N. Committee Against Torture has repeatedly condemned the use of solitary confinement in the U.S. In 2011, the U.N. special rapporteur on torture warned that solitary confinement “can amount to torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment when used as a punishment, during pre-trial detention, indefinitely or for a prolonged period, for persons with mental disabilities, or juveniles.” - American Friends Service Community

Solitary confinement is an outdated, counterproductive, and cruel punishment given to many prisoners as punishment for behavioral infractions or for any reason a Correctional Officer deems (so almost anything if the CO woke up on the wrong side of the bed). Although it may seem simple, a person commits a crime, then they misbehave in prison, surely it is assumed they should be punished and also separated from their peers to prevent harm to the greater population; no. The prison system is complex, the minds of people and people in prisons are complex, the reasons prisoners are placed in solitary are complex also. Complex problems can not be solved with simple, cruel, and unusual punishments. Solitary confinement severely damages the mental state of those subject to it for even short amounts of time and some prisoners are forced to stay in solitary confinement for years. Many people know how mentally draining life can be when not allowed to normally socialize with others due to Covid-19, so imagine how challenging and damaging it is to spend years alone, locked, in a small cell, fed barely edible and maggot infested food (yes multiple prisons have reported maggots found in food but that's an unrelated issue). Prisoners in solitary confinement enjoy the harmonious music of other fellow prisoners screaming after losing mental stability from prolonged isolation. When in solitary confinement all prisoners see is a dirty gray wall, they breathe a musty, humid, air from the old buildings, they feel betrayed. They feel denied, hopeless, lonely, worthless. If the prison system is created to rehabilitate criminals, why does it inflict further damage to these criminals.

Currently there are over 80,000 men, women, and even children in solitary confinement. WIth your signature (and many more from your friends, family, enemies, anyone really), we can end solitary confinement in the United States Prison System and bring that number to 0
