Do not allow non-profits to corrupt our elections
0 have signed. Let’s get to 200!
We, the people of the United States of America, want to raise our grave concerns regarding the rollback of the Johnson Amendment contained in the latest tax bill, Page 446, Subtitle C, section 5201.
This provision allows nonprofits, commonly known as 501(c)(3) organizations, “to make statements relating to political campaign in ordinary course of activities”
Ever since the landmark 2010 “Citizens United” case, we have seen a dramatic increase in the corruption of our democratic process by the influx of “dark money” into our elections. In 2016, we saw well above a billion dollars of superPAC and dark money pumped into our elections. In Pennsylvania, we saw a staggering $121 million poured into a senate race! Compare this with less than $100 million in total superPAC money in 2010, before the Citizens United ruling.
Our government no longer promotes the will of the people. Instead, it represents the desires of corporations to the detriment of the citizens of the United States of America.
With the introduction of the clause in section 5201, corporate and private interests will have unprecedented ability to fund our elections, leading to an even greater ability to essentially blackmail our elected officials. Even today, we hear many of your esteemed colleagues openly complaining about the effects of these large donors who will withhold campaign funding if this tax bill does not get passed!
This important, non-partisan issue, must be addressed. The United States is no longer a government “of the people, by the people and for the people.” Unlimited campaign finance contributions has made us a country “of the rich, by the rich and for the rich.” Is this the country you want our children growing up in?
I implore you, if you do nothing else, help save our democracy and strike section 5201 from the tax bill.
