Sonia Fletcher started this petition to Representative Nancy Pelosi and

Whenever I hear about another mass shooting, especially if done by a person in their late teens or twenties, I think about mental illness. The age is prime time for developing schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses (SMI). The availability of too many military weapons is part of the problem. The broken political system is part of it too. The hatred in our country is also part of it. But in my family, we think about serious mental illness (a brain disease). Most people with SMI aren't violent, but there is a small fraction who can be violent if they are not being treated for their disease effectively. I know this is true, because it happened in my family. The victim was another family member and it could have been prevented with proper treatment and more knowledge about SMI. There are countless preventable tragedies happening every day in our country. Some forms of SMI cannot be treated effectively, but most can be. I know this because my loved one with SMI returned to the beautiful person she is after getting proper treatment. What is the answer? My answer is universal mental health care for people with serious brain diseases like schizophrenia. Why should brain disease treatment be any less important than treatment for heart disease or kidney disease or any other part of the body? The mass shootings always make the news but there are countless preventable tragedies that shatter families like mine every day.
