June 19, 1865, is a monumental date in American history. During the Civil War, several slaveholders moved to Texas to remain away from the Union Army.

On January 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves on paper but it didn’t completely end slavery. The Lone Star State (Texas), remained defiant post the Proclamation in doing so they kept over 250,000 Africans in bondage. Slaves remained treated like cattle, which consisted of them being whipped, and killed for any attempt to depart.

Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger policed the Executive Order by Abraham Lincoln. This transpired in Texas, where Granger released the following statement in the District Headquarters of Texas:

“The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.” (June 19, 1865)

June 19 is just as symbolic as July 4 for American History. The United States of America is considered the land of the free, with this premise we should celebrate June 19 with vigor and excitement!

As of today, 47 states recognize Juneteenth as either a state holiday or ceremonial holiday. We must increase the popularity of this date Nationally.

The first step to end systematic racism is, to begin with, education. Incorporating June 19 (Juneteenth) as a Federal Holiday will increase awareness and entice every US citizen to learn the significance of the date thereof. In doing so, the majority will understand why Black Lives Matter

This is an urgent request for the United States Congress to pass legislation mandating June 19, a Federal Holiday!
