Ban Animal Cruelty
Ban Animal Cruelty
Animal cruelty can come in many ways, not just by hitting them. It can also mean neglecting them or making them do things they aren’t purposed for. For example, some dogs, mainly Pitbulls, are trained to do dog fighting. Animal cruelty is a malicious thing to do because animals are living creatures just like us humans. We should take that into consideration and be concerned with what they’re feeling. Apart from animal cruelty happening in homes, it also tends to happen at zoos and circuses where animals are being held in captivity. I want animal cruelty to be stopped and charge those who do a single act of it. In order to make this happen, I need President Trump to sign the PACT Act.
According to Hannah Sentenac from “Empty the Cages and Tanks! Here’s the Truth About the Lives of Animals in Captivity Versus the Wild” at zoos, animals such as elephants, tigers, chimpanzees, orcas, and dolphins have a drastic change from how they would act if they lived in their natural habitat. “Elephants in captivity are most of the time alone or with two more elephants, while in the wild they are with about 100 elephants” (Sentenac, 2019). This doesn’t allow them to socialize and therefore they tend to get depressed. Just like humans get depressed, we eat too much and get overweight. The same thing happens to elephants, which gives them a short life span with a 20 to 30 year difference. Tigers in captivity experience zoochosis which means they’re disconnected from reality and experience symptoms such as rocking and circling (Born Free, 2019). They also inbred tigers to get white pigmentation. This is cruel because the tigers later develop deformities and crippling disabilities. People at zoos really do this just to have rare animals to show which isn’t fair. “Chimpanzees in captivity show many signs of stress such as overgrooming on arms and legs and spitting” (Sentenac, 2019). Meanwhile, in their natural habitat, they form family bonds, they choose their friends, and they groom themselves. Orcas in captivity suffer from dorsal fin collapse which means they fin droops down because they’re unhappy (Sentenac, 2019). Just like elephants, they have a shorter lifespan in captivity than in their natural habitat. According to Sentenac, did you know that “some dolphins in captivity commit suicide” due to feeling miserable because they don’t have enough space to swim and socialize with other dolphins.
The animals that mostly get hurt in circuses are elephants and tigers. The trainers whip them if they don’t listen and use it as a command. It’s very unfair when the animal loses control and the whole world blames it on the animal like they’re savages. According to petakids.com, it’s a fact that tigers are naturally afraid of fire, so how do they expect for tigers to jump through a loop of fire? This causes the tigers to be afraid of humans and due to this the tigers lose control. How can this be entertainment to people?
Another thing that falls within the umbrella of animal cruelty is trophy hunting. Many call it a sport, but others think it’s terrible. People do it for fun or pleasure, but how is killing an animal and showing it to the public as amazing? According to the film, “The Bitter Bond” from the Born Free Organization, some people even keep baby cubs so they can form a trusting relationship with them. As the bond grows, the lion recognizes who was there all the time they grew up. So, if the person calls the lion to come, the lion will come with no hesitation since it knows who it is and the person sometimes gets paid for a shooter to get them.
All these things are horrible and I would like for you to help me reduce the amount of all these harmful actions that are being done to these animals. We should all treat pets as living beings due to the fact that a man’s best friend can be considered as someone who always with you through tough times. This leads to the statement that animals should be treated the same way as humans since we both have lives. We need to protect them because the only reason they can't do anything is because they aren’t able to talk. We can do this with the help of the PACT Act which states “The act specifically bans crushing, burning, drowning, suffocating, impaling or otherwise subjecting animals to serious bodily harm.” (USA Today). It’ll be a felony to harm them. Let’s have humanity give the respect they deserve. President Trump must sign the PACT Act in order to ban animal cruelty and make it a federal crime to hurt animals.
