Instructor James Reilly has been a Physics instructor at Rutgers University - Newark for the past 18 years. He was hired as an instructor after he displayed a remarkable ability to teach physics to his students as a Teacher's Assistant. His reappointment process occurs every two years, and is voted on by members of the Physics department. Over the past year, two colleagues from the physics department have passed away, and the reappointment voting is no longer in his favor due to an unwarranted agenda set against him by the Physics department.
Additional cause for alarm is lent by the fact that Instructor Reilly was overburdened with course sections this semester with no additional compensation, creating an unhealthy workplace environment. When the Dean of Faculty, Jan Lewis, was emailed repeatedly about the concern and lack of transparency surrounding the reappointment process, she ignored multiple requests for meetings. A petition to request the reappointment of Instructor Reilly collected well over 200 signatures in less than 8 hours. This petition was delivered by a group of students directly to the office of Dean Lewis, who, although present and available at the time, refused to accept the petition herself.
The reappointment process this year is taking place right now, between semesters, when no students are present on campus. The students are being completely ignored, despite the overwhelming support that they have for Instructor James Reilly.
James Reilly has been one of the greatest assets the Rutgers Newark Physics department has ever obtained, and the students have awarded him the Student's Choice Award for Best Physics Professor multiple times over the last decade during the annual Student Choice Awards. He dedicates all his free time to the students, offers help sessions until midnight every night, and schedules free tutoring sessions with students that need his expertise. He inspires his students to fulfill their dreams, and supports their goals unconditionally by giving himself to the students.
With the political shift in the Physics department landscape this past year, Rutgers Newark students fear that the department is placing less emphasis on the needs and desires of the students. Failing to reappoint Instructor Reilly will devastate the learning experience of students at this institution.
We the students at Rutgers University - Newark beseech Chancellor Nancy Cantor, Dean Jan Lewis, and Dr. Daniel Murnick to reappoint our beloved instructor James Reilly. His impact at this school cannot be overstated.
