Mayor Nan Whaley and other Dayton Ohio government organizations repeatedly have no interpreters at their press conferences. Whaley and others have been written and emailed repeatedly since the 2019 tornados in Dayton Ohio asking for interpreters. Through mass shootings and other events Whaley and Dayton police and Montgomery county sheriff have repeatedly held press conferences without sign language interpreters.

Right before one of the first Covid press conferences a complaint was sent to the Dayton Human Rights Commission. Just after this, at the beginning of the COVID outbreak Montgomery County public health began providing interpreters for their COVID-19 updates.

However Whaley persists in not having interpreters at her conferences despite repeated promises. This includes a conference today where the city of Dayton introduced a mask ordinance -- which has both health and legal implications. Today's conference also had Montgomery County Public Health in attendance who participated in this inaccessible news conference

It is clear that when Whaley and others who aren't public health are in charge of press conferences they feel no obligation to provide this civil right access. Worse, they're setting a bad example and model for the one department that has consistently provided this access since the COVI-19 outbreak.

While all press conferences should be interpreted, currently with masks - which cover lips and muffle speech - there is an added layer of importance. In emergencies -

The City of Dayton has had ample time to contract with and hire qualified interpreters - Deaf interpreters ideal. There is no good reason at this point to not have contracted interpreters for every single press conference.

Its very important that Deaf/Hoh/Deaf blind and others who rely on American Sign language and its variants have the same real time access

Please sign and help us push Whaley and the city of Dayton to reliably provide interpreters for its press conferences.
