Name Sonoma High wrestling facility for Coach Max Hale
Why this petition matters
One of the buildings to be named is a wrestling/weight training facility that this petition suggests should be named for Max Hale the man who created the Sonoma High wrestling program and was it's head coach for it's first 16 years After graduating from Cal Berkley where he was a standout football player, Max began his career at SVHS as a PE teacher and coach of the freshman football team. He coached Varsity Football from 61-64. Asked by Athletic Director Clarence Edsall to create a wrestling program, (None existed in the North Bay League II at the time)Max spent the next two years coaching the team through contests in the large-school NBL I league, until more high schools in the small- school NBLII created their own teams. He continued as head wrestling coach until the retirement of coach Edsall in 1976 when Max assumed the duties of Athletic Director. He created the Steve DelCarlo Award, an annual Most Valuable Wrestler Award donated by the Delcarlo family following Steve's untimely death in an auto accident. Max's career covered 37 years at the high school, and established the Sonoma High wrestling program as one of the strongest in the league.. He richly deserves the recognition of having his name on the new wrestling and training facility..
