Shane Harris the President of the People's Association of Justice Advocates and CEO of S Harris Communications has proposed "Willie Morrow Way" a street naming in Morrow's honor.

Dr. Willie Morrow, an internationally renowned Black hair care pioneer and creator of the "Afro Pick" passed away on Wednesday, June 22 in his San Diego, CA home. Morrow who was also the creator of “California Curl,” a hair texturizing company, leaving behind a legacy of inventions that has changed America's perspective on Black hair. Circa 1979 Dr. Morrow built and established his own headquarters at 4165 Market Street in San Diego, CA. He was the only Black man to build a two-story building and own it at the same time. The two-story building housed his barbershop, salon and publication company the San Diego Monitor Newspaper where he printed the San Diego Monitor Newspaper as well as operated San Diego’s 92.5 FM radio station.

In 2016, the Museum at California Center for the Arts in Escondido curated an exhibit honoring Dr. Morrow and his accomplishments. The exhibit featured over 250 objects, from paintings to vintage hair styling equipment. Most of the objects were part of Morrow’s own private collection. The exhibit also included a diorama of Morrow’s Market Street barbershop, featuring the barber chair he used for years. The red velvet chair hosted local Black leaders including the first Black judge in San Diego County, Judge Earl Gilliam, and even basketball hall of famer Michael Jordan as customers. In the 70s, Dr. Willie Morrow's popularity grew within the beauty industry, the Department of Defense then enlisted Morrow to teach and cut hair on military bases and in war zones, which led to him writing several hair styling and barbering technique books.
