Why this petition matters

On August 2nd 2020, Brittany Gilliam had taken her relatives out for a girls day. They were stopped by Aurora PD and forced to the ground by the offending officers. The children who ranged from age 6 to 17 were forced to lie of the ground at gunpoint. A video depicting the incident was released, showing the clear distress and pleading of the children with guns pointed in their faces. The Gilliam's were stopped because their license plate matched the one of a reported stolen vehicle. The officers stopped the family and used excessive force that is likely to traumatize and effect the lives of the family. It was later released that the stolen vehicle was in fact a motorcycle and not the blue SUV Brittany Gilliam has been driving. The officers had failed to do a proper evaluation and acted on their own racist and discriminatory instincts. To reprimand for their actions, the Aurora PD merely issued an apology and offered therapy for the children effected. The officers who assaulted the family have not been put on suspension and we’re let off with just a slap on the wrist. Although an investigation is taking place within the department, justice is not likely to be served. At bare minimum, these officers should be fired from their positions and charged for the psychological trauma they have inflicted on Gilliam's family.
