I am a psychiatrist and deal first-hand with the immense suffering and lack of sufficient resources; I am also aware that often patients are discharged from inpatient units long before they are ready because there is such pressure for beds.

My mental health has been a problem my entire life. Suicidal since age 6, self harming from 11, unable to hold down a job for more than a few months, if that, unable to complete high school because I get kicked out during hospitalization, and unable to provide a living for myself no matter how hard I try. Even with services being set in place to help people like me, there’s not a guarantee that I’ll ever get better. Now even those basic services are at risk of being taken away, and with a baby on the way I don’t know what I’ll do if I don’t have help. The basic income pilot is being cancelled, and even if I return to ODSP those rates are being reduced. Healthcare is becoming harder to access, even education for the future of our children is at risk. I will do everything I can to speak out, I hope others will join me.

The sad part is, once you realize that you’d rather stay at home and suffer than to be taken to the psyc ward... cause if you’ve ever been there... you definitely don’t want to go back.

They give you a sheet and a pillow to sleep on this single sized, flimsy, dirty, hole filled, mattress. There is holes in the walls, and you’re lucky if you get the room with the tv. I was in there for almost 2 days and they didn’t even feed us, or give us water! They checked up on us every 6 hours or so... You’re treated like a psychopath. Honestly... no one believes you, no one cares there. If you start freaking out they just try to sedate you instead of fixing the initial problem. We need to make a safer, cleaner environment for people who are already terrified, they shouldn’t be afraid to get help ....

I'm signing this because I've been through some incredibly difficult times in my life, and I can't imagine going there expecting help and getting hell.

I’m signing because I know how bad this is. And know also many friends who have experienced this place. Things need to change here... and for the better. We go here to get help. Not to be treated like we’re just another nuisance.

I believe mental health should be treated the same as all other health conditions. Imagine if these were the conditions in a cancer ward. Or a surgery room. There would be no tolerance.
