Change MBHS Graduation Venue

Hi, my name is Kaya Cox and I’ll be graduating with the class of 2019. I’ve thought about wanting our graduation venue changed for awhile.

Graduation is a once in a lifetime experience and many people would want their entire family to be able to witness it.

While we have a very nice auditorium, it’s just not big enough to hold a graduation. The class of 2019 has a very large class, consisting of many students with large immediate and extended families. I have a huge family who would all love to see me walk across the stage; but logistically, that won’t be able to happen with only 5 tickets. I also don’t want my family to have to see me walk across the stage on a screen in the gym, my peers probably feel the same way. I propose that we either hold the graduation ceremony at Doug Shaw or an off campus location, such as the convention center. If this were to happen, nobody would need tickets and everyone will be satisfied since our families who love us and helped us get to the point of walking across the stage will be able to watch that special moment happen.

If we aren’t able to hold an off campus graduation for financial reasons, there is a simple solution. The senior class can hold fundraisers to pay the cost of holding our graduation off campus.

I have posted a poll asking who in my school supports my idea, and I got a huge amount of support. I had many students from all grades, including alumni, show support the idea.

While holding our graduation in our auditorium is sentimental, there just isn’t enough space. The auditorium is a perfect venue for smaller graduating classes, but unfortunately, most of Myrtle Beach’s current and incoming classes are very large. I believe that if our graduation venue was changed, the students and families would be much happier. Thank you for taking the time to consider this.
