NLD SUPPORTERS started this petition to MYANMAR MILITARY GOVERNMENT and

A Call for the Immediate Restoration of Democracy and the Rule of Law in Burma/Myanmar

In the early hours of February 1, 2021, the Burmese/Myanmar military, the Tatmadaw, suspended democratic governance, declared one year of emergency rule and arrested the democratically elected leaders of the NLD led government, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and many leaders of her party.  Unknown numbers of persons have been detained, communication networks, including state television, have been shut down, as has internet access.  This military coup, the first against a civilian government since 1962, violates Burma/Myanmar’s constitution, denies the will of the people as expressed in the 2020 elections, and, if allowed to continue, takes the country backwards after two successive elections.  Today was to be the opening day of the new parliament, which would have certified the election.  The military, led by General Min Aung Hlaing, mounted this illegal coup to prevent election certification.

This undemocratic seizure of power cannot be allowed to stand, particularly at this extraordinarily challenging time for the people of Burma/Myanmar and for their country.  The COVID-19 pandemic is taking a heavy toll on life and wellbeing, and continues to spread widely.   The economy, as in so many COVID-19 affected countries, has been devastated, and the growing tourism sector essentially shut down.  Burma/Myanmar’s people have been both long-suffering and remarkably resilient in the face of great suffering and decades of military misrule.  Now, at a time of national crisis, the military has chosen again to put its power ahead of the will and well-being of the people of the country.  The international community cannot allow this seizure to stand.

We, the undersigned, call for an immediate restoration of rightfully elected civilian rule in Burma/Myanmar.  We call for the immediate and unconditional release of all political detainees.  We call for the immediate certification of the 2020 elections.  And we call for those in the Tatmadaw who are true patriots, to support civilian rule and refuse to be a part of this illegal act.

Countless women and men in Burma/Myanmar have given their lives for the establishment of democratic governance in Burma/Myanmar.  We must honor their memories and resist this imposition of military rule.

Signed,
