Media and press reported my mum’s death before I even knew about it. On the 9th February 2018 we arrived at our holiday park, ready for a relaxing holiday, at 9.28pm my phone rang, it was a police officer, I knew it wasn’t good news, I found out over the phone that my mum had been murdered in her own flat, stabbed multiple times to the face and body; and if that wasn’t enough, mum also suffered bruising to her face, arms and back, they completely killed every part of my mum.
Thankfully two people were arrested and have been charged with murder, they are due at the Old Bailey in July 2018. I am grateful to the police for the speed of the arrests and all the work they are putting in, to enable me to get justice for my mum.
I cannot remember the first two weeks after this phone call as was just so numb and oblivious to what was going on around me. I begged to be able to hold my mum’s hand, one last touch to confirm to me that this was actually real but I was advised not to as the defence asked for a
second post-mortem, which by LAW they are allowed to do so within a 28 day period, well you guessed it right mum was held at the mortuary for just under 4 weeks! A period of time that caused me unimaginable pain as could not even set a date for her funeral.
I find it beyond comprehension that a person(s) is charged with murder and on remand, that then their defence team has such a long amount of time to hold the body. I never got to hold my mum’s hand that final time, as my mum had to be defrosted for the second post-mortem this caused my mum to start to decompose, and was not in a state that I was allowed to see or touch. I had to hug my mum’s coffin on the floor.
It has been 7 weeks since my mum’s passing and during that time I have been hit with a £5,000 funeral bill that no one was expected or prepared for. There has been no support put in place by the government, with no professional support for myself or my children.
The support from the Government is lacking, there is compensation available which can take over a year to come through but nothing there when you are desperately trying to find money for a funeral.
To date, I have still not received any referrals for counselling or professional help for my children, who know that Nanny was murdered because it was all over the media and press. No access to support groups has been offered and I find it devastating! Victim Support I appreciate are doing a fantastic job, but the funding has to be there to enable them to offer more and offer it quickly.
I am very lucky as have a great husband and support network, however not everyone is so lucky and so much more needs to be done by the government, rather than brushing it under the carpet, as statistics show that less than 750 people in the UK are murdered each year, but each of those people have a family that is suffering.
The list of changes that I am fighting for at parliament are as follows:
The timescale of the defence team being allowed up to 28 days to complete a second
post-mortem is far too long and should be reduced to 10 days after the 1st post-mortem.
The press should not be allowed to report anywhere the murder or sudden death of someone, till at least the families are notified. They 1st reported at 10.30am and I did not find out till 9.28pm Friday evening.
The victim support system has to be overhauled, offering more help, without delays. This should include help for grandchildren of victims and not just children.
Rather than a compensation payment that can take time to come through, a fund should be set up to allow families instant access to financial support for
