To Wear Hats in School

To Wear Hats in School
Hats are part of clothing accessories, so why can’t we wear them with all the other accessories were allowed to have at school? Hats are used for style these days, times have changed since the rule was established. In today’s society it’s not offensive to have a hat on indoors it’s part of the style, it helps with bad hair days as well. Accessories such as and or like dog collars, head bands, women’s purses and handbags can be worn and used in school. The school argues hats remove some safety in the building for covering our face, but what do these masks do? Cover all important facial identification features but we can’t cover or move our hair with a hat? The school board believes safety is insured by not wearing hats or hoods, so then why is it not an issue when we cover our face. Many others and I personally, I feel like those two rules contradict themselves. I also fail to see how identification is a problem, as I’ve seen many cases of the school staff tracking down whoever is wearing a hat to make them remove it. Another part is that we can bring bags, phanny packs, and purses to school which pose such a bigger threat for safety than a tight hat on your head. What kind you hide in a legitimate bag versus your hat? I feel like another good point to touch up on is the fact that we not only have two officers on school grounds, but have also never had a shooting or recent dangerous threats of any sort, so in all reality is safety and security really the issue? City schools such as CNS and syracuse school districts were these issues actually happened are allowed to wear hats in the buildings with no consequences. Other small schools like Southern Cayuga, Hannibal and Oswego let their students wear hats to school, it’s just easier to let us the people have what we want and make it easier on the administration to not have to enforce that rule that takes up half their day walking around looking for students with hats on. The administration should have bigger things to worry about like our grades and mental health versus what we express in the way we dress. Many people have different ways of expressing themselves Im sure you’ve seen many diverse outfits and accessories throughout the halls. Some choose to wear things like dog collars, loose chains, bracelets and necklaces with metal spikes on them, and 2+ inch heels. Hats are no different and if anything, less distracting and hazardous then some of these other accessories. One of the things I admire about our district is the freedom we have to express ourselves by how we dress, within reason. Hats for many people is just another way to express ourselves. All 250 signatures, and other students who agree but didn’t get to sign, all agree with the point I’m trying to make or they wouldn’t sign it.
