Parents and Community Supporters of MVLA Students started this petition to MVLA Board of Trustees

The MVLA school district has been planning for the reopening of our high schools since last spring.  We are very appreciative of the time and sincere efforts the faculty and staff have put into creating an online learning environment. However, we are also dismayed that despite Santa Clara County allowing schools to bring students back on campus when the County is in Red phase for 14 days, MVLA has no plans to allow students on campus until the Orange phase, and no commitment to require teachers to be onsite until the Green phase. This impractical standard effectively means our students will not be back on campus until Fall 2021.

Mounting evidence across the country indicates that large high schools can bring students back in the classroom with minimal risk to both staff and students with appropriate safeguards and protocols. These districts also provide an option for students to remain online if their personal situation requires that.

Further delays in on campus instruction means additional learning loss for our students (not to mention impacts on mental health). Other districts across the country have safely returned to the classroom by balancing the risk of all stakeholders and not solving for the corner, worst case scenarios. It is time to stop taking the “easy path” of remaining in distance learning. MVLA should follow the successful examples of others and make the hard choice to reopen in early 2021 or when the County allows.
