Phoenix Ryan started this petition to MVHS

Rye is a kind, courageous and resilient young human who identifies with they them pronouns and as non binary. At the school they attend, they have been told they cannot use their pronouns or their name unless it has been entered in the system. In this case, they cannot get a parental signature as their parents are homophobic. As part of the LGBT community myself, I believe that teachers using the right name and pronouns do not harm anyone, as it is not impacting anyone else's lives. By signing this petition, we can hopefully get the school to understand the severity of this problem and it's impact towards the transgender youth attending this school. As a school that thrives on diversity, it is sad to see a pause in the acceptance of gender diverse students. This petition will show the school that rye has a whole community behind them that will hopefully change the school's hurtful ways as prohibiting a student from using the preferred name and pronouns can leave a huge impact on the individual's mental state. I would know as I once went to the school and I once asked to change my name actually in the system and they told me I couldn't without parental consent even though it would have only been a name change on the roll. This was just simply telling teachers off the books and it is so sad that such transphobia is still prominent in a place young adults must go every day which can cause their mental health to drop. I do hope we can change the school's views and let Rye and other students develop and find their identity no matter who they choose to be. And remember, #JusticeForRye
