My name is Dylan Hollingsworth, and I am a junior Music Performance major at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. This semester, Edinboro University announced that they will no longer be accepting music majors after the current freshman class. The administration decided to inform the students of this 10 weeks after the semester began and 3 weeks after they took the music majors off of the official school website, all the while instructing the faculty not to disclose any information to the students until the announcement was made. University President Dr. Fred H. Walker would not hear any statistics or solutions presented by the faculty despite their efforts to come up with many.
On top of feeling completely and utterly disrespected by the university administration's lack of communication, as a future musician I feel that this is taking away a career opportunity for many young musicians who do not have another choice outside of this university. Also, knowing how difficult some of the music courses can be even if you are a talented musician, the freshman students are now pressured to pass the classes they must take this semester without the opportunity to retake the course if they do not do well. This may force some of the students to transfer schools where they will have to audition AGAIN to get into another music department.
Not all of the department students are willing to stand up and stick their neck out for the major, but your support for all of us would speak volumes. While we may or not be able change anyone's mind, we can still show that this decision will affect more than just the current students enrolled in the Music & Theatre program.
