Early Out McMillan started this petition to Murray School District

***TO ALL MURRAY SCHOOL DISTRICT SCHOOLS: EVERYONE IN THE DISTRICT SHOULD HAVE BEEN SURVEYED REGARDING WHICH DAY THEY PREFER FOR EARLY OUT DAY. SOME SCHOOLS DID NOT PREVIOUSLY HAVE AN EARLY OUT DAY AND WOULD PREFER FRIDAY, NOT WEDNESDAY. SIGN IF YOU FEEL YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN HEARD***

It has recently come to our attention that the Murray School District is changing McMillan Elementary early out day from Friday to Wednesday starting the next school year (2019-2020).

The Murray School District Superintendent and Director, Elementary Teaching and learning recently responded to a parent’s inquiry of the change. Here are some of the reasons provided:

·         Early out days provide our teachers with needed time to plan and prepare

·         Currently all of our secondary schools and three of our elementary schools have early out days.

·         We want all teachers to be afforded this opportunity as we believe it will directly impact student learning

·         It is important for us to have a unified early out day so that teachers have the opportunity to collaborate with other teachers outside [of] their building during this time should they choose to do so

·         A unified early-out day also gives us the opportunity to provide needed professional development for our secretaries and other support personnel without having to take them out of their buildings which puts additional pressure on principals and school staff[s]

McMillan Elementary currently supports early out days and our teachers are already afforded the opportunity to have time to plan and prepare – on Friday. This has worked well for parents, students and teachers FOR DECADES and it shows. We have one of the highest rated teacher hours and teacher development hours in the district. We are highly ranked amongst elementary schools. We are TOP THREE IN THE STATE for SAGE TEST SCORES. Early out on Friday allows our students a longer weekend to rest, relax, spend more continuous time with family and return to school rejuvenated. It is valuable time for teachers as they are able to assess the full week which allows then to properly plan for the upcoming week. Mid-week early out negatively impacts working parents who are already struggling to manage getting kids to/from school and work. Most parents do not have flexible schedules that allow them to leave early in the middle of the workweek. Our kids involved in extracurricular activities that fall on Friday and over the weekend will result in them missing more school to attend events out of town. Families who want to get a start on weekend family bonding time will also result in more absences overall. Forbes magazine featured an article in regards to the benefits of a three-day weekend. They specified that three-day weekends have been linked to reduced time off, an increase in overall productivity, decreased turnover and ability to recruit and retain top talent. We are not suggesting three full days for the weekend, but rather two and three-quarter days for our students to recover. An interruption in the middle of the week with early day being Wednesday is disruptive. Our children will need to ramp up twice, once on Monday and again on Thursday.  Another thing to consider are special programs such as computers, PE, music, art and library. These are held in the middle of the week as to not conflict with holidays or early out weeks.

What will the unintended consequences be and who will it affect? What makes Wednesdays a better uniformed early out day than Fridays?

The Mesa County School District recently went through the opposite change. Parents were requesting that early release not happen in the middle of the week. With that, the district released a public survey asking parents if they would prefer to have early release on Fridays instead of Wednesdays. Their district considered the public survey results of more than 6,500 people, 70% of which opted for early release Fridays.

Rather than mirror at the other schools within Murray School District what has proven to be successful at McMillan Elementary and what clearly has worked well for parents, students and teachers, the District wants to change it after decades of proven achievement.

If you are not supportive of the District’s unilateral decision to change early out days from Fridays to Wednesdays, please support this petition. The only way to be heard is to speak up!
