The famed statue of the infamous police commissioner and mayor of Philadelphia from Frank Rizzo has been removed. It’s been a long time coming, and this would not have been made possible without the concerted and powerful mobilization of Black and Brown activists in the city of Philadelphia.

While this should be a time of celebration, we must not also forget that homage to Rizzo exists elsewhere in the city.

If we want to truly honor and express true justice, there must be consistency; thr mural of Rizzo must be taken down.

Located in what is arguably still the Italian Market on 9th Street, the mural has represented a sense of community pride for the Italian residents of the neighborhood. It is shameful and saddening that this level of anti-Blackness persists after so many years. It is saddening how white supremacy has enabled an entire community who was once subject to the same systemic violence and oppression as their Black and Brown peers. The consistent restoration of this mural following past uprisings shameless enabling of right-wing and terroristic violence against Black, Indigneous, and Latinx communities. We call upon Mural Arts and demand that this mural to removed effectively immediately. We call for consistency in our elected council members to  eradicate this symbolic presence of racial oppression.
