EDIT : PLEASE DON'T SPEND YOUR MONEY TO PROMOTE THIS!!! That's not the goal and I don't want you to spend your money on a cause that doesn't need it!!

MHS is trying to transition students and staff into electronic passes being carried on either the students phone, or school issued chromebook. 

Here's why some students find this to be an issue.

1.) To have a student carry a pass on their phone, the staff issuing the pass has to take said students phone, and enter a password to activate their pass. Not only is this unsanitary, but to have a teacher actively on a students phone may cause issues with parents, or make students feel uncomfortable with a teacher handling their phone.

2.) In the time of a pandemic, or any time truly, It is unsanitary to have kids bringing their chromebooks as a pass to the bathroom. Not only would it be unsanitary to bring it, once you're using the bathroom, there's no safe place to put your chromebook while using the bathroom or washing your hands.

3.) You have to pick a specific location (i.e. A wing bathroom) and if too many students are selecting said bathroom, you won't be able to go. This is an issue because we as students don't know what bathrooms are going to be crowded at what times, and lead to students being unable to use the bathroom as needed.

4.) The dean limits your amount of passes per day. This becomes an issue because he doesn't "see the need for kids to be going to the bathroom 6+ times a day." What I feel may break those boundaries is the fact that students menstruate, or could be having stomach issues that day, causing them to possibly even go several times in a single class period.

5.) Teachers and administration time your trips to the bathroom. The issue with this is that bathrooms get busy, or it takes a little longer than expected. Getting mad at a student who takes 8-10 minutes in the bathroom due to stomach troubles and limiting their trips thereafter is almost sadistic.

6.) Though teachers are trained and informed on how to handle students who aren't following the rules, some teachers may take this as an opportunity to not. Today (1/6/2022) before the e-passes and the pass rule goes into effect, I watched a teacher follow kids completely up and down the A wing hall, continuously telling them that they need a pass, to go back and get a pass, and that this "won't fly". Though I don't know the situation, it was unnerving and distracting to watch the teacher follow the kids up and down the hallway past my class.

Though I understand the need for organization, and knowing where the kids actively in the school are, I feel that this pass system is not the best fit for our school. From not having well enough service to connect, to the uncleanliness and instability of bringing a chromebook into the bathroom. There has to be a better way.

I understand that a pass system may need to be implemented after last semesters actions, however this is being rushed through, they're just now training the staff, and it takes away from class having to whip out your chromebook and fill out a pass request rather than the 30 seconds it takes to fill out a paper pass. I think that though it could be a "useful" system when its used properly, i don't think we're ready for such a system yet.
