Convert Marine Drive Gymkhanas(Mumbai) to Public Recreation Centres for Mumbaikars

South Mumbai is lacking space for its own citizens as city is growing vertically owing to lot of redevelopment projects.
There are very few open grounds for children/adults to play apart from cricket grounds like Azad Maidan, Cross Maidans etc.
These grounds were leased by British to promote cricket culture in India.
The lease for these grounds (Wilson, Hindu, Parsi, Islam) has completed.
These grounds are mainly used for marriages/cricket events and hardly available for public to use during October to March.
These grounds are also a big nuisance to residents around as they project powerful floodlights/halogen lights during events which go past 12 am.
Also there is lot of traffic jam during weddings as cars are double parked and causing headache for residents and police.
I believe Maharashtra Government should take back these grounds and develop it for citizens rather than keep them in custody of greedy managements who are only interested in making money.
Citizens of Mumbai have very limited access to alterative sports like swimming, football, basketball, tennis, golf.
One must be member of a rich club to have access to such sports.
Hence due to limited exposure to such sports, India overall is lagging behind in all sports except Cricket.
1. Create parking facilities in gymkhanas like Wilson Gymkhana.
2. Create Mumbai 3D map on Wilson Gymkhana and use it for town planning, for kid’s education, traffic education for kids etc.
This would be one of the kind of park in world which has complete city built in 3D and people can walk around.
This will also instil sense of being a citizen of Mumbai as they view Mumbai holistically.
2. Use Hindu gymkhana to create cycling track, multiple swimming pools
3. Use Parsi gymkhana for creating jogging track, tennis courts, football fields
4. Use Islam gymkhana for golf driving range, basketball court.
5. Create Ferris wheel overlooking Marine Drive and upcoming Chattrapati Shivaji statue at sea.
6. Citizens to pay nominal fees to avail facilities which can help offset loss in case of revenues collected from events.
There are ample of grounds in Mumbai for cricket so taking away these grounds would not harm cricketing community.
Alternatively, BMC can lighten up Azad Maidan/Cross Maidan and citizens can play cricket under flood lights.
Pitches can also be rented for day/night matches at Azad Maidan.
I strongly believe that kids/adults are willing to explore other sports outside cricket and this can help us build sporting culture for citizens and make us fitter.
Tax paying citizens deserve more open space and quality of life.
Maharashtra govt should not renew lease but use it for betterment of lives of citizens as we already pay taxes and deserve more open breathing space.
Lets vote for fitter Mumbai.
