Stop the construction of the Coastal Road in Mumbai, before it's too late!

The government of Maharashtra has recently proposed a construction project, which, if carried forward, will change the heart and soul of Bombay forever;
Its iconic coast.
The government plans on building a coastal highway, which will span from Nariman Point in the south, to Kandivali in the suburbs. The implications of this project are disastrous to many different factions of Mumbaikars, but perhaps most importantly, we all stand to lose the crux of our historic coastal city; our waterfronts, our coasts.
The project involves reclaiming land along the western coast of Bombay, and creating a proposed “green zone” along it. They will then go on to build an 8 –lane highway adjoining this small patch of greenery. This will completely obliterate Bombay’s sea front, and will ensure that the only place we can view the sea front, is from Marine Drive, or our cars on the 8-lane highway.
Instead of walking by the sea we will walk on reclaimed land, looking out onto the highway. Instead of sea breezes our city will breathe in toxic fumes.
-The government’s grounds for building this waterfront monstrosity stem from Bombay’s need to curb traffic. The current cost of the Coastal Road is Rs. 12,000 crores. By the time it is built rest assured the costs will multiply. Experts have shown that for less than half the current cost, traffic can be restrained by implementing a comprehensive transportation policy.
-It will have a hugely detrimental environmental impact; fishing villages will be lost, mangroves destroyed and coastal heritage severely damaged.
Mangroves that protect Mumbai from flooding & Tsunamis will be wiped out as well.
-It will actually increase congestion and the feeder roads running through our properties, churches, Gaothans and Koliwadas will become a nightmare to drive through.
-Carter road’s promenade will be ruined and Bandra's scenic vista of the ocean will disappear , along with the sea fronts at Napean Sea Road, Breach Candy, Worli, Dadar, Juhu, Versova.
Imagine going to Priyadarshini Park, or Chowpatty Beach, or Varsova beach, and instead of looking out at the Arabian Sea, watching an onslaught of traffic on an 8-lane highway. Trying to conceive a version of our city without its waterfront is almost unimaginable.
Our sea front is the convergent point in our city, which amalgamates people from all economic backgrounds. It gives people an open space in an otherwise congested city and it gives people a relief from an otherwise frenzied city. It gave Bombay its “Queen’s Necklace”, and it continues to give Mumbai the fundamental essence which makes our city special.
Are we willing to lose all of that? We will if we stay silent.
