Help ameliorate revolting prison conditions in India.
Poor physical conditions tremendously affect the well-being of prisoners on an emotional/mental level. Being confined to one physical space without freedom is difficult and can affect prisoners in different ways - some may become more aggressive, others depressed and despondent. Irrespective it has a significant impact on their emotional and mental health.
How can we make the process of integration less painful? Support NGOs like "Prayas" who strive to keep families in touch with imprisoners. This is important because if the family is in touch, then the prisoner has a ray of hope and improved morale. He is likely to do all that is necessary to ensure his release from prison as early as possible, be less susceptible to criminal influences while inside the jail and integrate more easily into society once released. Also, it is important for the family, especially the children and the other dependants of the prisoner - they too are likely to be more hopeful and experience less trauma and stigma.
Lastly, we can help prisoners integrate into society by offering them counseling and opportunities to earn a living after their release. For example, in Telangana, there is a program in which petrol pumps are run by ex-prisoners. This offers them an opportunity to earn a living without the stigma of being an ex-convict.
