Ronald Shirk was a Vietnam Veteran who grew up on Montrose Avenue in Laureldale. My father served our country for 20 years and raised our family in Muhlenberg Township.  After the railroad tracks behind our house were removed and a walking trail was made, my father walked that trail everyday.  He would talk and wave to everybody he knew and new friends he got to know.  He also cleaned up all debris and trash that was left on the trail.  He would even humanely take wayward groundhogs up to Bernhard's Dam.  He fought Alzheimer's disease for the last 6 years of his life and got to a point where he couldn't walk on his beloved trail everyday.  He died on June 2nd, 2018 and speaking for my family, it would be a great and fitting legacy if we could have the Muhlenberg Rail Trail named "Ronald Shirk Trail" after my father.
