Demand Apology and Removal of Insensitive Meme from MuggleNet
Why this petition matters
On August 3, MuggleNet posted a Facebook meme that depicted Jay Jay the plane bombing a building. Photshop allowed for Jay Jay to be added into this real life picture that showed an actual bombing of a city in Syria. Smoke and fire can be seen as the building explodes. The post reads, "They did make quite the exit!" The words "hogwarts" are placed over the explosion and the words "fred and george" are placed underneath Jay Jay. The post is still up on their Facebook page and can be seen at this website: https://www.facebook.com/mugglenet/photos/a.10151012727100075/10163927606195075/?type=3&comment_id=10163929938425075¬if_id=1596497784055194¬if_t=feedback_reaction_generic
Many people commented on the post, saying that it is insensitive and should be taken down immediately. My own personal post reads, "Incredibly insensitive, please take down this post immediately. Bombings and killings are not something we make a meme of. Human suffering and murder are not things we laugh at." I then added, "And feel free to offer an official apology as well." However, a full day has passed, and despite several comments that the post should be removed, MuggleNet has failed to remove the post.
Such posts incite hatred and violence against others. Such posts ridicule the very real suffering, pain, and murder that others face on a daily basis. Such posts trivialize civil wars that have destroyed countries and resulted in the massacre of innocent men, women, and children.
MuggleNet promotes itself as an inclusive space for all. In fact, it officially announced that its "one and only concern is to create a safe community where all feel welcome." It criticized J.K. Rowling for "loudly pronounc[ing] harmful and disproven beliefs about what it means to be a transgender person." Mugglenet said that it "find[s] the use of her influence and privilege to target marginalized people to be out of step with the message of acceptance and empowerment we find in her books." It says that they will renew their commitment to serving the Harry Potter community "from a more conscious standpoint."
How can MuggleNet say such statements and then post such a blatantly insensitive meme? We can see the blatant hypocrisy. Where is their sensitivity to the Syrian people? Where is their conscious standpoint for the widows and orphans? Where is the sensitivity to those who have lost limbs due to such explosives?
Please sign this petition to have MuggleNet do the following:
1.) Take down the meme immediately
2.) Offer an official apology for its complete lapse of judgement and insensitivity
3.) Make a commitment to not post such content again on any of its social media platforms
Side note: unfollow MuggleNet and share this petition with others!!
