Oram Old School Restoration Project started this petition to Muckno Parish and

Our purpose to restore Oram Old Schoolhouse is to use it as a safe and friendly space/meeting place for all in the community. When the roof is restored we wish to turn the building and attached garden into a sensory area where people can meet socially and comfortably without any alcohol being served, especially non-sporting young people, people with sensory issues, people who feel lonely and isolated among others. Everyone will be welcome!

The reasons we wish to retain and renovate the old school are as follows:

It has been part of our heritage and culture for 160 years.

It is one of only two buildings in the village of heritage and cultural value.

The external building is unique in the sense that no money has been spent on it to update, upgrade or restore it other than the windows blocked up. Therefore it is as it was built 160 years ago and has architectural uniqueness.

It is part of our village landscape.

It was a cross community school in it’s early days which we see as vital to our heritage and culture especially in this unsure and unsettling time of Brexit.

Big Tom went to school there, reading was his favourite subject.

There is huge local history attached to the building meaning it is of local and regional heritage importance. The first teacher in the school Joseph Mooney, possibly with relatives still living in Oram. If this is the case then there is a connection with Art Mooney Community Childcare Ltd. and we feel this connection is important to the Old School and the community.

There is only one meeting area in the village and that is the GAA Club. With the GAA’s policies and insurance it is becoming more and more difficult to hire the building for non GAA activities and events. We need an extra venue and the Old Schoolhouse is ideal.

The Old School has historical value to our community and we are asking for your help in keeping it alive for future use for all members of our community, especially our youth ~ a place for those who do not partake in GAA activities to thrive.
