Reverse the School Board Decision and Reopen the Mequon-Thiensville School District to In Person Learning with Option to Use Online Curriculum.
This is a petition to reverse the recent vote and open the Mequon-Thiensville school district to in person learning according to the plan provided with option to proceed with online curriculum for those that choose to do so.
In survey #1, 70% of surveyed parents indicated they would be comfortable sending their child back to school. In survey #2, 56% of parents indicated they would be somewhat or extremely comfortable sending their child back to school for in person learning which will work well with student safety and reopening plans as the number of students will be less than anticipated.
With the reopening of the school approaching most of the parents registered their kids, paid their fees, purchased school supplies and made plans for the school year.
To the parents astonishment the board members unilaterally made a decision to close the school without letting the parents weigh in on the matter or without presenting any data upon which the decision was made. In addition, there was no mention of what criteria and data will be used to reopen the schools, forcing families to make last minute decisions and in some cases leave the district.
There is public data which indicates that kids are not in serious danger from COVID-19 and the population that is at highest risk are 70 years and above with pre-existing conditions. We do not undermine the seriousness of the situation, however it appears that COVID-19 will be with us for some time and there are far greater risks in this world that could prevent our children from getting an education they deserve.
Many of the families are working parents, they go to work every day and “risk their lives” to provide for their family members, maintain their households and pay property taxes to fund our school system. It is unfortunate that we are facing a situation where our teachers refuse to go to work.
We must, and can do better for all students; Students that have full time working parents, students living in lower income homes where they are not able to provide tutoring, baby-sitters and alternate education solutions are put at a significant disadvantage. The decision made by the school board at the last minute should be rescinded immediately. It is unreasonable to expect residents of Mequon to spend millions of dollars for the schools where the teachers do not want to teach.
Public and private schools around the nation are opening for in person learning. Why MTSD teachers concerns with Covid-19 are more important than those of the working parents in the district or private school teachers or all other residents and employees around our district and county? Our nation went through many horrific events in its history and this is not the worst of them. Instead of focusing on how to improve our children’s education, promote sciences and leadership our children are provided with less than mediocre online curriculum's and will certainly fall behind their peers.
Please sign this petition to reverse the school board decision and open the school to in person learning using school boards recommended safety guidelines and create a productive and safe learning environment for all those that choose to attend in person classes.
