The present scenario of the post graduate nurses working in clinical areas is getting worsen day by day. There is no separate cadre/ post for nurses with post graduate specialty degree but at the same time a doctor with PG degree is getting higher posts/ salary/ increment etc. The post graduate nurses most of the time didn't get their areas of specialization in the government hospitals. For eg: A Psychiatric mental health nurse in government/ autonomous bodies is assigned to do duties in causality/OT and in the same hospital the psychiatric/de-addiction/rehabilitation units will be occupied by a diploma nurse/nurse with Physical disabilities. There is no special allowance/increment for post graduate nurses in most of the government/autonomous hospitals like AIIMS/ JIPMER/ PGIMER /DSSB/ BHU/ PSC/ BSSC/UPSSC/RRB/ESI etc.
The another problem right now exist is the eligibility criteria for teaching post like clinical instructor/ tutor/ lecturer post in institution like AIIMS/PGIMER etc. The eligibility is either BSc Nursing/ Msc Nursing with three years of teaching experience. The clinical experience is not considering for the post. Because of the less salary in private institutes, most of the MSc nurses after their course completion forced to work in clinical areas . Because of that, they are forced to end their career in clinical areas, retire as a staff nurse grade I, like his/her GNM colleague. The teaching profession will remain as a dream for them even if they are PhD holders because of the lack of teaching experience.
I, myself a post graduate in Mental Health Nursing working as a Nursing Officer in an apex institution. I completed my course in 2014 and after that I worked as Nurse in charge in psychiatric Rehabilitation centre under Comprehensive Mental Health program for Rs.12000/month salary. After fed up with my educational loan and debts I applied for staff nurse post in government sector and got selected in Banaras Hindu University Trauma centre exam, for staff nurse and after one year I joined AIIMS as nursing officer. My ambition is to become a teacher and I have natural my bend of my life towards the teaching profession. So many vacancies are coming recently, even if I am having 3 years of clinical experience in my specialty, I am ineligible for the post because I am not having teaching experience. Its very unfortunate that Nursing being a subject which has full application in clinics, the administration is not considering the clinical experience even for the entry level cadre in Teaching like clinical instructor post. There is no specialty post for nurses in clinical areas too. The parallel post graduate holders like MSW and MSc psychology staff etc are enjoying higher grade pay and status in the institutions.
Please help me to bring a change in this by following:
1. creating specialty cadres in the clinics like psychiatric nurse/ counsellors, community health nursing officer/ Advance nurse practitioner etc.
2. Consider post graduate degree with the relevant clinical experience for promotions.
3. Make one extra increment for the post graduate nurses
4. Relaxing the eligibility criteria of experience for teaching post as either teaching or clinical experience.
Hope that your support will help me to reach this petition to the Honorable Health Minister and Honorable PM and necessary action will take on this matter.
