It is currently not mandatory for an organisation in Australia to provide paid parental leave to its employees. The government incentive at national minimum wage is not in line with the salary rate of most skilled professionals. This situation will only damage a family's ability to navigate their household finances in the year after a child's birth and contribute to forcing parents back to work before they are able to manage. Also, providing paid leave only to mothers, says to fathers that they do not need to be part of raising the child. And it says to mothers that they are solely responsible for the upbringing of the child. In today’s world, it is the right and responsibility of both the parents to care for their new born. When both women and men have equal access to paid parental leave, that’s when Australian women will have gender equality in the workplace.

We therefore ask the Parliament of Australia to make it mandatory in Australia for organisations to provide both male and female employees with a minimum of 12 weeks parental leave(which can be availed any time within 1 year of child’s birth) paid at the employee’s salary rate. This will help Australia move closer to shared parenting and flexible workplace model adopted in most other developed nations. Also, it will be a testament to the Australian value of gender equality.
