High school students are having a huge problem that is effecting their education and physical health everyday.   This is getting lack of sleep because most of their time is spent at school.

Every morning high school starts at 7:30 AM and lasts for 7 hours 5 days a week.  This is 35 hours a week teenagers spend at school.  There are 120 total hours in those 5 days.  Teenagers are recommended to get 9.5 hours a sleep each night.  That would be a total of  47.5 hours of sleeping in those same 5 days.  Which leaves only 37.5 hours left to complete all of our  other responsibilities.   These responsibilities include jobs, homework, school projects, sports, family  time and all other extra curricular activities.  As you can clearly see, this is impossible!  Which leads to teenagers getting way less than 9.5 hours of sleep each night.

This problem can be solved by simply shortening the school day to 4 hours or shortening the school week to 3 days.  This way when kids come to school they would be well rested and ready to focus on learning.  In addition, all of their other responsibilities could be achieved.

I personally deal with this problem everyday which causes me to miss first period or be late.  Teachers may think I am being irresponsible but it is really because I am exhausted from the previous nights lack of sleep.

Please sign my petition to help the Manatee County School Board wake up and find a solution to our exhaustion.
