Let people go off campus for lunch at SLCSE
Why this petition matters
High school students attending the Salt Lake Center for Science Education (SLCSE) should be allowed to go off campus during their lunch periods. Susan Levin, Director of Nutrition Education for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PRCM), was asked about the food pyramid that school lunch programs follow. Levin said that the pyramid, which was created by the USDA, is flawed because it favors the interests of agricultural industry. Specifically, she says, the allowances for fat are too high. By allowing students to leave campus during lunch, we are helping the community's local businesses and giving students the privilege of a varied diet. Consequently, this change would have the effect of promoting outdoor fitness because students could then engage in various outdoor activities during their lunch period. The benefits of merely being outside vs being inside are well documented. Being in the sun increases the production of vitamin D in your body, vitamin D plays a role in your immune system, and in your nerves and other parts. With the increasing spread of viral diseases this season, students may benefit from a decrease in the close proximity eating environment that is SLCSE. In conclusion, providing students with diversity in the form of nutritional alternatives will be beneficial to them and their community. Sign this petition to support SLCSE students and please share with your friends to help us get the support we need.
