PETITION TO INSTALL ELEVATORS AT THE 125Th STATION OF THE #1 TRAIN

The escalators at the 125th Street station of the #1 train are frequently out of service and cannot be safely used by elderly and disabled people. As they only go to the station’s mezzanine, riders must still use the stairs to reach the platforms.

Morningside Gardens, located one block from the station, is a Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC) that has a large proportion of residents over 60 years old. These residents depend on access to the #1 subway line to remain engaged and connected to the wider community.

Furthermore, enormous institutional, commercial and residential growth in the surrounding neighborhood makes elevator access to the station a priority.

Therefore, I call upon the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to use available resources, such as the federal Infrastructure Act, to install elevators at the station.
